Buying 24 years of PlayStation Plus subscription VS S&P500

Published on

HOLY MOLY! A redditor just dropped a THICK $2,100 stack on PlayStation Plus until 2048. Meanwhile, Warren Buffett is probably having heart palpitations. Let's see what this mad lad could've done instead!

I decided to stack PS Plus subscriptions until 2048 because of the absurd price increases the past few years. I figure that I’ll probably be gaming for most of my life so it would save a good bit of money. First I loaded up on Essentials subs and then upgraded it all to Premium for $199. Just wanted to share as I figure you guys would get a kick out of it.

TLDR:

Sony's Price Hike History #

Looking at your SONY receipts:

That's roughly 7% increase PER YEAR. Oof!
What make for Future Price Projections:

Total cost over 24 years: $8,947.32
Our guy's investment: $2,118.76
Pure savings: $6,828.56

But What About Investing in The S&P 500 Though? 📊 #

Starting investment: $2,118.76
S&P return: 10.2% historical average
MINUS yearly PS Plus costs (at Sony's 7% increase rate)

Real numbers after paying for memberships:

The REAL Bottom Line 🤔 #

After 24 years:

But Hold Up... 🧠 #

  1. Netflix' memberships just jumped 55% IN ONE YEAR
  2. Disney+ up 27%
  3. Every streaming service is going "price hike go brrr"
  4. Gaming services might follow the same path
  5. What if increases go HIGHER than 7%? 👀

The Verdict 🏆 #

The S&P 500 still wins on pure numbers, but the gap isn't as wild as you'd think. Plus, our guy is:

As Warren says, "Never invest in a business you cannot understand." This gamer understood one thing: subscription prices only go up.

Plus, you can't rage quit the stock market when it's being toxic. Just saying.

Note: Calculations assume Sony's historical price increase patterns and historical S&P returns. Your controller durability may vary!
